Slow stitching is the mindful and creative practice of using simple stitches to improvise designs on fabric. The focus is on the process of creating rather than the product, allowing space for each participant to connect with their innate sense of creativity and intuition.
Participants will be introduced to the mindful craft of slow stitching and be invited to create a small and decorative patch or brooch. Participants will learn a straight stitch and quilter’s knot. All materials will be provided and no previous sewing or art experience required.
If her name sounds familiar, Joyce Crown-Wilkins will joke that it is probably because she has taught you, your children, or grandchildren. She started her 30 year career in Tappahannock after earning her BFA from VCU, but she is a local artist and educator whose experience extends beyond our region. Along with participating on TAG’s Education Committee, Joyce has also served on the Fine Arts Steering Committee (2023) and the Standards of Learning Writing Team (2000) for the Virginia Department of Education and the Teacher Advisory Council for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (2011-2023). As a Fund for Teacher recipient (2023), she traveled to Barcelona to study mosaics in the studio of Livia Garetta and then returned home to teach these skills at RCC and TAG. She has also traveled to Greece to volunteer at the Skopelos International Film Festival for Youth (201(9) and to Japan, as a Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholar (2001) to study its educational system as a Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholar.
TAG is an acronym for Tappahannock Artists’ Guild and Tappahannock Art Gallery. We are dedicated to making our community a more beautiful place.
